I wish I knew how other people defined “magical” shows.

Dicks picks vol 9, 9-16-90 @msg = one of my favorites and it’s universally disliked for some reason.

Btw, I actually got a Sarno earth drive last month. I’m still trying to figure out if I like it. It’s incredibly stiff. My pickups or amps could have been the problem in my office rig.

was so glad to be able to have a good copy of it.

Dude, no way! Awesome! I have that one on my phone! 8-7-82

One day, I was reading about the struggles in Ireland, and noticed the Dead did a shout out to Bobby Sands in 1981 during a live performance of "He's Gone".

Turns out it's Dick's picks vol 13. Nassau Coliseum. I have that one!

I need to hang up my two night, uncut Dead+Co Hampton poster.

Just jamming to some D+C on relisten. My Dad thinks it's the coolest thing he's ever seen. We had a drink together. I never see him anymore because of this covid shit. It makes me sad.

The GD was much more of a high wire act than dead & company, so the highs were significantly higher, and the lows correspondingly lower.

There were magical moments in some shows, like the fire in the mountain that they played at ventura county fairgrounds after everyone who drove down from norcal had to drive through wildfires that had sprouted up over the entire coastal route down, or the time at the same venue where on a sunny day a bunch of cloud cover and winds blew in during morning dew, and stayed there until the start of sunshine daydream, when a ray of sunshine broke through to bathe the stage in sunlight. And some rather weird coincidences: they were playing fire in the mountain at a show when Mt. St. Helens erupted, or the first time they played the Other One and Neal Cassidy (the Neal in that song, and Bobby's former roommate) died in Mexico the same day, and Bobby has said he felt him pass as they played.

Then there were the magical shows themselves. Of the ones I saw, one in Irvine in 1985 where after the show Mickey was quoted as saying they touched the sky, the one at the greek theater in 1988 where it was 113 in Berkeley at the start of the show, and the second encore was a sweetly mangled version of blackbird. Most of the first Dick's picks releases are in this camp, though I've found the Dave's picks to be much more spotty. A lot of the individual releases, like the "Wake Up to Find Out" one or the 7-8-78 one from Red Rocks are also great shows.

To balance these out, though, there were some stinkers. I remember one in Vegas in I think '83 that was godawful, though the heads did buy out all the alcohol in the Aladdin that night, and the first show of the early '90s Europe tour might be the worst concert they played, with the possible exception of Woodstock, where they were almost electrocuted on stage in a rainstorm.

Most were somewhere in between, though, and some folks loved/liked the show, and some didn't as much, due to individual tastes and experiences.

On Dick's Pick No. 9, most heads really didn't like Vince, as he was a pretty significant step down from Brent. That run was pretty good (had friends who went to the shows who went to hundreds over the years) but I think their assessment was good shows with some great moments. The best recording of the Vince version of the band is I think the Saint of Circumstance record from Giant's Stadium. Monster show where the band was clearly loving playing. It's worth watching the video on youtube.

Vince was a heckuva lot better than Bruce Hornsby at least.

The only spot I don’t like Vince on vol 9 is on iko iko.

Fwiw, I had no idea he slit his own throat in 2006. He was a sad guy.

A good post Jerry show to check out is this one by The Other Ones. I was at this show. Really fun and light vibe. Still a good and fun listen and [probably] not just for nostalgia’s sake lol.

I can’t figure out how to link to it from my phone but here is the show details.

The Other Ones • 2000-09-23 (02:15:08) • Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, Live Oak, Florida

Yeah, Jerry's death hit him hard, among other things. He had a post-dead project called Missing Man Formation for awhile, which is a pretty morbid name for a band.

The keyboard position for the dead was the real life version of the spinal tap hot seat. Every one of them died well before their time except for Hornsby and Tom Constanten, and those guys were only in the band for a year or two each.

Btw, re dicks picks 9.

That morning dew hits me hard. I was near San Francisco earlier this year. I had just really found out about how cool that song was. I listened to it by myself in a hot tub at 6am hungover. And it was chilly and morning dewey everywhere. It was badass. I have a connection to that song now.

Speaking of Jerry, today would have been his 78th birthday.

Yup.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of his death there is a 9 day feed going on between today and the day of his death, August 9. Bunch of clips of a lot of groups covering dead songs. Some extended Bob and Phil led groups doing more extended sets, but lots of others ranging from indie acts to some traditional bluegrass types doing single songs. It's on fans.com and the relix channel on youtube, as well as nugs.net. Watched a couple hours this afternoon, and it's pretty good. Called Daze Between.

25 years? Wow. Doesn't seem like that was a quarter century ago.

I feel really old. Then again, I am really old.

Played my solar flare today. Didn’t get to play loudly, but it sounded badass.

I look forward to hearing your opinion once you've had a chance to really put the solar flare through its paces.

I spent most of today building a klone kit I've had around for awhile. Finished it about an hour ago, still haven't plugged it in to see if it works.

Solar flare looks cool. Always wanted to try out an earth drive too

I've got a pretty nice Jerry tone dialed in with my LP middle position coil tapped into keeley comp and twin

of course, I can't play anything like Jerry. I've had my Jerry stylings described as "Grateful Dead: Kidz Bop edition" before

So, I played my earth drive and solar flare at decent volume today with the warmoth pseudo wolf.

The earth drive really gets that under drive sound beautifully. Dayum. Amazing.

The solar flare sounds more like a typical distortion. Sounds great, but isn’t instant jerry. I’m sure my amp may have something to do with that. Rocking the dr z mazerati anniversary. I’m guessing with my Gt trio and a solid state power amp, it would sound more like 1977.

What's the speaker in the Dr. Z? A lot of the Jerry tone comes from the JBL 120D/K/E speakers he used throughout his career.
