By popular demand :) (or is it just 'cause I wanna do it :idk: )... here is a build thread for the Wizard MTL clone I'm building... This is just a fun personal project for me that like the 12000 I build a couple of years ago. I decided to do this because there is a little lull in the Bottle Rocket Pedal Preamp design. Obviously, I won't be selling anything like this through Henning Amps...

I'll be using a PCB from Jason over at Headfirst Amplification in Australia:

This will be much like the original from the control standpoint, however, I'm not doing any of the foot switching, the adjustable line out, the half power switch or a loop since I don't need any of that. All switching will be available using push/pull pots on the front panel like the original.

I've decided to build this in 100 watt form and ordered the following iron for the project:

PT: Custom ToneClone MP100-67 (520V B+) w/added 4A 5V tap for the relays
OT: ToneClone O100JM
Choke: ToneClone MAR100-C (3H)

Just got the chassis in. I'm going to use the Valvestorm Project Chassis because it has a million holes to do just about anything:

I decided to do custom faceplates/backplates, so I did this mockup in Photoshop for the guys at ValveStorm to do the design and have the plexi panels made. They will be black with white lettering:

That's all for now. Collecting parts, since I have a ton of stuff already. Probably will be a few weeks before I actually get started building since I have to wait for the transformers and other parts...

Excited to see the progress of this thread. Are you not going to do a loop? I know the original doesn't have one but I'd think it'd be easy to add a metro loop?

No plans for a loop - I just don't need them in my setup, however, I have a metro loop sitting around and the holes are already cut in the chassis, so if I wanted to add one later it would be easy.

Just finished enlarging the holes in the project chassis to accommodate my layout. I had to enlarge the third and fourth holes on the front of the chassis for the Standby switch and the large Fender style jewel lamp. Also enlarged the vertical holes on the right side of the front of the chassis for the HI and LO inputs. On the back I had to enlarge one hole and drill a small hole just under it for the impedance selector. I used a stepped bit for enlarging the holes and a regular drill bit for the small hole I cut. Here are the stepped bits. You can get them from Amazon:

I did break one bit trying to drill that small hole - damn these steel chassis are tough!

I ordered a deburring tool from Amazon that should be here in a few minutes that I'll use to deburr the holes. Here is what it looks like:

I'll post that up when I do the deburring, 'cause ya just gotta deburr your holes.

Definitely a cool project and PCB. Seemingly not one to sit on his hands for too long, he's now working on a vh4 board!

One thing that always amazes me is the type of specialty tools that have been designed to make certain things just a bit easier. Ingenuity at work right there. Looks great so far.

Bro, do you even de-burr?

Sweet thread, Steve. Thanks for posting the progress. You planning to sell this when you're done building or keep it with all the Bottle Rockets and Cherry Bombs I imagine your music room stuffed with?

I’m keeping this one. It’s like the Plexi I built - just a personal project. You’re right though - lotsa Henning Amps in the studio!
