CC was perfect for the time period. Sure, people can look at it now and say it's ratty and high-end and blah blah blah, but that was THE shit when it first hit.

I'll throw in two:
Laaz Rocket - most people say it's muddy shit. So what, it works.

Obituary back when they first started. Very lo-fi, but perfect for the songs they were writing.

Pretty much anything by Pissed Jeans. Big, loud, and bratty fuzz. Of course, I'm a firm believer there is no such thing as bad tone, just improper use. Their guitar and bass tones fits their music.

I didn't even consider Dime as having bad tone. I think he sounded awesome.

The older I get, and the more guitar "heroes" I see play, the more I realize how truly gifted Dime was. He was the total package. His melody, timing, groove, everything was perfect. He had such a mastery of the instrument. I could listen without wondering if something would be off or less than perfect.

agree 100% Broslinger.

I have seen a few comments saying they hated his tone though.

I couldn't imagine him sounding any other way. :rawk:

I got myself into that mode of thinking “great player bad tone” for Dime not too long ago. And then I went back and revisited the albums and really just forgot about the tones and just listened to the whole production. And I remembered exactly why I liked his sound years ago. Because it fucking fits the music. His lead tone is perfect, his melody and phrasing are a joy to listen to and it all just works. Great Southern Trendkill has my favorite tone of all their records because it fits with just how angry and pissed off that album is. Especially Underground in America/Sandblasted Skin.

Randy Rhoads: I’m not a fan of his tone in Blizzard. On Diary? Fucking love his guitar sound. It’s perfect for that album. I wish Blizzard had that same production. I don’t know what they did differently from a production stand point but it works. Also Tribute by extension.

I’ve heard a lot of people bag on Van Hagar era tones and for 5150 and OU812 I kind of get it. But not For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Ed plus SLO is one of my favorite sounds. They were able to get in that ballpark with Balance. And I loved his guitar sound on A Different Kind of Truth. No it doesn’t sound like Van Halen I or Van Halen II but who fucking cares? It evolved.

Also I like the guitar sounds on Slipknot’s first album.

Zakk. A lot of people do not like his tone. But I don't like those people so it's a wash.

Zakk’s early BLS tones took a while for me to gel with. Mainly because I loved his tones on No Rest and No More Tears. But yeah, the dude sounds great no matter what and you know it’s him easily.

Pushed Jcm with big glass and EVs, how can you hate that? Say what you will of his style, riffs, whatever else I dont care. That tone is a brick shithouse.

I'll add two more, Mclusky and Future of the Left. Same singer and guitarist. I just love the chaotic distortion and the big sounding bass tone. His guitar tone is not very conventional, but I love it.

I think some of that is how he recorded & mixed Sonic Brew, and to a lesser extent Stronger than Death and 1919 Eternal. Super basic mix.

As for recently, I just saw him a couple weeks ago on the Zakk Sabbath tour, and even now with the ZW audio stuff he still has great tone IMO.

Kinda agree with the Randy comments too. Objectively it's shrill and nasally and weird, but it fits somehow.

So many people online bashed Dimes tones for a long time. I never understood it.

Very distinctive and fit the music perfectly.

There was a period of time when I looked at his tone as the ultimate metal tone.

Still love it to this day :thu:

Dimes tone was perfect for what he was doing and I don't think any of the tube amps of the era would have done the job. I do love me some Randall tones. I'd take the tone on TGSTK or pretty much any Crowbar record and be happy with it. As part of my daily amp based procrastination, I've been studying various opamp based Randall schematics
